Meet some of the kids from "Hogar Infantil"
Meet Isabel.......

This young woman is Isabel, and although she is 12 years old she is only in the fourth grade. She tells us that her mother never wanted her, and that’s why she gave Isabel to her grandmother to raise. Her father long ago abandoned the family. Isabel’s grandmother makes her living by selling dishes and housewares in rural communities. In order to move on to sell in far away villages, she has repeatedly had to interrupt Isabel’s schooling. Although she is so behind in school, Isabel is very hopeful that she can now continue her studies and fulfill her dream of one day becoming a teacher. She is happy to be at Hogar Infantil and grateful for this opportunity she has to make a future for herself. She says that when she has children of her own she will be a good mother and never abandon her children.

Meet Daniel.....

Daniel is from the nearby capital of Chiapas, Tuxtla Gutierrez. He was brought to Hogar by his Uncle Margarito after a series of unfortunate events. To begin with, Daniel’s father was abusive towards his mother, and soon after Daniel was born, his father left them both. His mother needed to find a job to support herself and her son, so she started a business selling alcohol. Because of her emotional pain and easy access to the alcohol, she began drinking heavily. Daniel was neglected, and his aunt and uncle were very concerned about him. They tried talking to Daniel’s mother, but she soon became sick and died. His aunt and uncle gained custody of Daniel, raising him as if he were their own child. When Daniel was older, he learned that the two people he thought were his parents were really his aunt and uncle, and when he learned about his past he became angry and rebellious. Because they were feeling overwhelmed with Daniel’s behavior and felt as if he needed more than they could give him, they decided to look for some help. They turned to Hogar Infantil.

Daniel is learning to deal with his feelings about his past, and in the meantime he’s adjusting well to his new school and new home. He is 11 years old, with many hopes and dreams. When he grows up he wants to be a teacher, like his teacher at school. Daniel is well-liked and accepted both at Hogar and at school. He is most famous for his infectious smile and his perfect rendition of a rooster crowing – it sounds very real! He is working hard and knows that Hogar is giving him a chance at a new, exciting life.

Meet Tomás.......

Meet 7year-old Tomás, who recently came to live at Hogar Infantil. His mother left his father because of domestic abuse, and his father was eventually put in jail. Until now, Tomás and his 8 year-old sister have been living with an aunt. Since his mother left the family, they have not seen or heard from her. Tomás would like to see her to tell her that he is now living at Hogar Infantil and will grow up to be a good man. He is excited about starting school and one day hopes to become a doctor.
